What’s happening to Intel?

INTC vs AMD Stock Comparison

I still remember hearing stories about Intel employees “Calling in Rich”; it was actually a recruiting advantage to talk about Intel stock back in 2000. Nowadays, it’s surprising to see the stock down to 2002 levels (post dot-bomb era). When I see the stock performance versus AMD, several things come to mind…

  • AMD goes 64-bit first…
  • Dell begins using AMD…
  • AMD beats Intel to 1GHz…
  • Intel looses market share to AMD again…
  • Intel fails to meet predicted earnings again…
  • AMD goes to a numbering system after reporting that CPU speed cannot be measured by GHz, Intel shortly follows suit…
  • AMD sponsors Lance Armstrong while Intel nabs Mariah Carey for their “Laps Campaign”…

Be assured that Intel will make the necessary changes to beat out the competition (see the Inquirer note about Woodcrest), yet I wonder if it will ever become a truly innovative company and completely annihilate the competition. Personally, I think the company has become a little soft around the edges; let’s see how long it will take to trim down and start going for the jugular.

Sincerely,
The Closet Entrepreneur

  1. I built a new rig last month and went with AMD – they are killing Intel these days. I believe AMD was also first to go dual core.

I think that many purists have known about the performance benefits of using AMD for quite a while now, and it was only a matter of time before Intel’s brand name would stop compensating for the lack of big performance gains. There are definitely signs that the sleeping giant is finally waking up (see article at Tom’s Hardware), it’s just not acceptable in my eyes that a company like Intel has taken so long to respond.

  3. Heck, you know Intel is hurting when even Dell now offers an AMD chip.

True, Dell went with AMD even after Intel released the specs of their upcoming server CPUs to them.
