Karl Fisch’s Did You Know? Presentation Remix

There’s a video by Karl Fisch entitled “Did You Know?” that has been making the rounds since August of 2006. The presentation was originally intended to get the faculty of Arapahoe High School thinking about new and different ways to prepare their students for the world they will be entering after High School. The video has gone viral and Karl has been gracious enough to share all the materials he used to create the presentation, including his data sources.

I caught word of the video through a coworker who directed me to Scott McLeod’s version. Scott removed the Arapahoe H.S. specific slides and reduced the presentation from 8 minutes to 6 minutes. I then took Scott’s version and 1) changed the background and font, 2) reworded a few of the slides, and 3) added an upbeat soundtrack to keep people from fazing out. Please note: although some of the slides are reworded, none of the original information has been modified or changed.

If anyone is interested in using this latest version of the video, all I ask is that you include a link back to this post for the correct embed code. The embed code (shown below) contains the original video dimensions of 476px wide by 356px high. Using different dimensions may cause the video to appear distorted.

All the credit for the presentation goes to Karl Fish and Scott McLeod, so please visit Karl and Scott’s websites for all the materials and info behind the video.

  1. That Rocked!!

  2. Nice job. What’s the music? It certainly gives it a different feel – might help deflect some of the criticism on the web that the original was meant to “scare” people (it wasn’t, although I was intending to make my faculty sit up and pay attention).

    mark: Thanks!

Karl: The music is by Fatboy Slim and is entitled “Right Here, Right Now”. I’m surprised to think that some people believe that you’re trying to scare the public; I was immediately inspired by the piece the second I saw it. I think the original is great, I guess you can’t make everyone happy.

    🙂

  4. Very cool! Thanks for the link, Tomas!

  5. Whew – that is quite nuts

  6. That was really great!

I downloaded and viewed the word doc, but didn’t see any sources for the facts – at either rate, I love stats and this one is great.

    Thanks, Tomas.

Andrew: I’m glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!

AhmedF: Seriously! The crazy thing is that I’m pretty sure most of the figures shown in the presentation are probably outdated by now.

Brian Sheahan: Hey Brian, try this link Did You Know Sources and let me know if that’s the Word document you were looking at as it has a list of his sources and original sources.

Hi I am a community development planner in county government. One of our mayors showed us Scott’s version as a powerpoint. I like your version and the music. But I can’t seem to figure out how to save it. I am on a Windows 2000 xp.

Do you have a powerpoint version? I will make sure to put your credit on here and a link.

Thanks for your help and inspiration.

Hi Laura, unfortunately the PowerPoint version has a special font that is not commonly found unless you own a Mac. You can download the actual video file from Viddler.com, the link is shown below. Let me know if you have any issues.

Hi Tomas, the link you provided doesn’t work anymore 🙁 I don’t suppose you’ve an alternative link, or a link to the PPT (I understand the Mac problem… but I’ve got a Mac so hopefully that’ll be okay :))

@ Mark: Thank you for bringing that to my attention. Give me some time to upload the video to MediaFire.com and I will share the link as soon as it is available for download.

Thanks Tomas! I appreciate it, and I’m looking forward to it 🙂

While Karl’s original presentation is breathtaking, the facts presented are mostly inaccurate or unverifiable. Researching the sources Karl offers I find only a handful of the data he uses is accurate. Fully two-thirds of the data he uses is wrong, simplified to the point of being misleading, otherwise misreported, or unverifiable.

Should we be pointing the way to the future with inaccurate information?
